Everything we do at Cornerstone Baptist Church, we intend to do in response to God’s Word to us. Apart from His speaking to each of us, we would never have known Him. Though He created Adam and Eve and made Himself known to them, they did not trust the truth of His words. So their hearts became, as the Bible puts it, “darkened”. After rebelling against Him in the garden, God would have been completely justified to allow humanity to go its own way. But in His love, He did not! Ever since then, from the whole story of the Bible on through the history of God’s people in the church, God has been making a community of people to call His own. He has done this by His Word, revealing Himself to His people (us) as He speaks. He called to Abraham and His descendants and spoke to His people, Israel, through the prophets. And now, “in these last days”, says the writer to the Hebrews, “God . . . has . . . spoken to us by his Son”, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:1-2). The New Testament is the eyewitness testimony about Jesus, set down by those who were with Him. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, these writers wrote the scriptures that would guide “into all truth” those of us who have come after them (John 16:12-13).
From Ezekiel’s vision of the valley of the dry bones, to Cornerstone Baptist Church in the 2000′s, God has always created His people by His Word. Just as we more intimately know those whom we share our lives with, so we, as God’s people, come to know Him better as He speaks to us through His Word. This is why the Bible takes such a prominent part in our times together at church (expositional sermons on Sunday morning and evening, Wednesday evening, Sunday School, etc.). Since we believe that God is speaking to us through His Word, we want to be careful to slow down, listen thoughtfully, and respond in faith to that which He is telling us.
